Charges laid against former MD of Taber employee

A Taber man is facing fraud charges following an investigation that dates back to last fall.

The Taber Police Service (TPS) says in September 2023, the Municipal District (MD) of Taber reported to police that a former employee had allegedly used an MD of Taber business credit card to make unauthorized personal purchases.

Following an investigation, police say they determined that a former employee of the MD had used the card to make unlawful purchases. The TPS says the alleged purchases equated to roughly $12,000, over 11 months. The accused then reportedly coded the purchases to appear as legitimate MD of Taber business. The alleged amount has since been returned to the MD by the suspect, according to police.

Bryan Badura is charged with fraud over $5,000.

He is scheduled to be in court on July 9.

The MD of Taber has issued a statement in response to the police investigation and charges being laid.

“Regarding the Taber Police Service’s recent announcement, it is crucial to underscore the proactive response. The Municipal District of Taber continues to implement more stringent safeguards and processes,” says Chief Administrative Officer Arlos Crofts.

“We are confident that these measures will augment the integrity of our financial controls.”

The MD says council and administration continue “to be diligent in enhancing financial controls and conducting external reviews and audits to safeguard municipal assets”.

Additionally, the Municipal District says it is committed to working with the TPS throughout this process and will “continue to prioritize transparency and accountability”.
