Tourism Medicine Hat sees 2023 increase, will target Quebec in summer campaigns

Jun 4, 2024 | 4:20 PM

Tourism Medicine Hat saw an increase in engagement with its services in 2023 as it presented its findings to city council Monday night.

Jace Anderson, the executive director of Tourism Medicine Hat, said they saw an increase to website traffic and event listings, as well as an 11 per cent increase year-over-year to the visitors information centre.

“There’s a handful of data points in there that we’re really proud of. The overall trajectory of the data was an improvement over 2022 and so that’s very encouraging,” Anderson said.

“We were able to implement some new strategies and do some things in an improved way.”

Anderson is hoping that momentum carries into this summer.

To support this, the organization is launching the Medicine Hat Summers campaign, which will promote our long, hot summers, encouraging outdoor enthusiasts like mountain bikers and golfers to make the most of them.

As in previous years, potential tourists from Calgary and Edmonton will be the focus of the messaging, with Quebec added for this summer.

“We understand that the Quebec market is one of the largest segments of van life travel,” Anderson added.

“They’re on the TransCanada Highway, they’re in vans particularly, so they’re looking for campsites and they’re looking for a certain experience that we believe that we’re able to offer.”

Anderson encourages Hatters to be ambassadors of their own city by adding events to the Tourism Medicine Hat website and encouraging family and friends to visit.
