Jeffries Park Outdoor Rink relocation underway

May 10, 2024 | 3:55 PM

The relocation of the Jeffries Park Outdoor Rink in the Crescent Heights area of Medicine Hat is underway.

The demolition of the old rink is nearing completion.

Preparation of the new site will see construction start in late May.

Access to the construction area will be prohibited to ensure public safety.

The hopes is to have the project completed by mid to late June.

The new location will be a few hundred metres west of the old site, and just south of the parking lot at the Kinsmen Baseball Complex.

Jordan Duncan, an engineering technologist with the city is overseeing the project.

“The overall project plan is just to relocate the old location to the new location to make use of this parking area,” Duncan said.

“The old pad is going to remain as a lay-down area to lessen the impact on this parking site. The shack will remain until the end of the process because it’s involved with water servicing that will come late in the project.”

The outdoor arena will remain 100 metres long, but will be widened from the 42 metre width of the previous arena, allowing the facility to be used for badminton and basketball.

The site is expected to be open to the public before the end of summer.

The old facility was aging and due for a replacement.
