Dinosaurs once again roam the Earth as Drumheller attempts to set a new world record

Drumheller, known as the Dinosaur Capital of the World, once again honed their namesake as over 3,000 people dressed up as dinosaurs to try and set a new world record.

The unofficial record of 1,163, set last year in Dundurn, Sask., appears to be shattered as people from across the country flocked to Drumheller Saturday to break the record.

Organizers had over 3,000 wristbands to help with counting and registration, well above the required amount for a new record. They ran out.

Hundreds of attendees had no wristbands, which forced Guinness to count manually with the help of drone footage.

Kyle Tremblay travelled from Edmonton to attend.

“The trip was definitely worth the experience. Amazing experience. I think we broke the record,” Tremblay said.

“With Drumheller being the Dinosaur Capital of the World, this is what I would expect it to be like,” he said.

The attempt drew people from even further, like Veronica Cunningham, who travelled from Kelowna, British Columbia, to be there.

“I only found out about it last week. My family is out here and they said they were doing it, so we ordered a costume and made our way here. I hope we break the record – we’ll be part of history,” Cunningham said.

Fellow British Columbia resident Melissa McClurg travelled from Victoria to be part of the fun.

“It was a two hour drive, a two hour plane ride, a two hour layover and then a three hour drive. It was totally worth it,” McClurg said.

“We wear these costumes all the time in Victoria and we had to come out to do this, we couldn’t miss it. I really hope we break the record. Both sides of the street coming in [to Drumheller] were packed,” she said.

Allison and Emma Ingram, a mother and daughter from Edmonton, made their way south for the festivities. Not only did Emma have fun, Allison said that she thinks the community impact is immense.

“This is so much fun. We’ve nerver done anything like this of course, and so it’s super exciting to try and set the world record. I think we’re going to blow the record out of the water,” Allison said.

Emma added to the sentiment.

“If someone else takes it, we have to take it back,” she said.

Some familiar faces were there too, as CHAT News ran into Hudson from My96.

“This is phenomenal. I can’t believe the amount of people we have here. I believe the unofficial record was somewhere around a thousand or so,” Hudson said.

“Too many people are here. Guinness actually has too many people to count, so they’re getting back to us after drone footage. It is just phenomenal though,” he said.
