Volunteers helping with Root Cellar community garden

Medicine Hat Root Cellar cultivates learning through community garden

The warm and sunny weather this week may have gotten you in the mood to go outside and for avid gardeners, to get their hands back in the dirt.

At the Medicine Hat Root Cellar Food and Wellness Hub, volunteers are working away at the community garden.

It’s a space where they teach families, schools and other community groups how to plant, tend to and harvest food.

Harvested food can either be picked by Hatters, or used in the Root Cellar’s emergency food pantry.

The garden area will also be used for fundraising events, like dinner in the garden during the summer.

For the first time this year, they will also be hosting food markets.

“The idea of growing our own food is amazing,” said Melissa Mullis, executive director of the Root Cellar.

“We have so many volunteers and so many people that get involved. It’s a really cool part of what we do and we love showing it off.”

For anyone who is itching to get gardening again, the Root Cellar is seeking volunteers to help with the community garden.
