Province looks to reduce workplace injuries among young Albertans

The Alberta government is taking a step that it hopes will help to keep young workers safe.

The province is providing a grant of $175,000 to CAREERS: The Next Generation’s SafeGen program.

SafeGen is a free program that allows high school students to gain foundational knowledge on health and safety in the workplace through online or in-person instruction.

Minister of Jobs, Economy and Innovation Matt Jones said Friday young workers historically have higher rates of occupational injury or illness.

“It’s important that Alberta’s young people get valuable work experience and that they are working in healthy and safe environments. The SafeGen program helps students acquire skills and experience with a solid foundation of workplace health and safety knowledge,” Jones said.

Last year, nearly 8,200 students completed more than 11,000 SafeGen courses.

CAREERS President and CEO Andy Neigel says they envision a generation of young workers who are not only skilled, but who are equipped with a comprehensive understanding of workplace safety principles.

“This grant enables us to further our mission of guiding youth into successful career paths while prioritizing their well-being,” says Neigel. “With Government of Alberta support for the SafeGen program, CAREERS can further support its teacher partners across Alberta by providing them with a free and user-friendly resource to prepare students for a safe start to their careers.”
