Brooks Bandits set to launch BCHL playoff campaign for the first time

Everything is different for the championship-winning Brooks Bandits as they start a playoff campaign in a new league for the first time.

The Bandits, who have been Junior A National Champions for three consecutive years, joined an exodus of teams that left the Alberta Junior Hockey League for its B.C. counterpart earlier this year.

After the swap, the Bandits alternated matches with four other Alberta teams in the BCHL as part of a temporary province-only division.

It’s a decision defenseman Keith McInnis told CHAT News on Thursday has worked out for the best.

“We’ve been super grateful for this opportunity,” McInnis said.

“Every game has been more meaningful and all of them have been harder, too.”

After finishing first and dominating the division, the Bandits this week head into a semi-final playoff matchup against the Okotoks Oilers, a team the Brooks squad has never lost to this season.

Game 1 of the best-of-seven series gets underway at 7 p.m. in the Centennial Regional Arena. If the Bandits win the series, the team moves on to a provincial final.

The winner of the Alberta division will qualify for the Rocky Mountain Challenge, a one-off championship-style event.

Next season, the Alberta teams will be fully integrated and compete solely for the BCHL championship. As its not recognized by Hockey Canada, the B.C. league teams do not move on to a junior national championship.
