YMCA Employment Centre hosts inclusive job fair in Medicine Hat

Apr 9, 2024 | 3:37 PM

Wednesday afternoon the YMCA is hosting an inclusive job fair.

The event will be a space for those with physical, mental and learning disabilities to meet with employers around the community.

However, everyone in the community is welcome to attend.

Jodie Engbert is the general manager of community employment programs at the YMCA.

Engbert said people already struggle to find work, but those with disabilities often face extra disadvantages obtaining employment.

Available jobs at the fair include cashier, housekeeper, driver and community service worker positions offered by eight different employers.

Candidates are asked to bring a resume and be ready for pre-screening questions.

The goal from the event is for candidates to book a formal interview, or potentially be hired on the spot.

“One of the other things we can offer back to the employers is if an employer is needing any type of worksite modifications or assistance with any technology, for example, to accommodate the persons with disabilities,” said Engbert.

“So it really is about a partnership between us and the employers of the community.”

Engbert hopes that the YMCA can start doing this fair once, or even twice a year.

Wednesday’s event starts at 10 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m. at the YMCA Employment Centre.
