Vehicle break-ins rise with the temperature, say Medicine Hat police

As the weather heats up, so does the amount of car break-ins, according to the Medicine Hat Police Service.

Mix in large upcoming events like Tigers games or the Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede and the likelihood of a break-in is even higher, Const. Dave Hrycyk said.

Mall parking lots are also hot spots for car theft, because the criminal can ‘shop around’ for the right vehicle.

Hrycyk said cars are usually broken into for valuables inside and not the actual vehicle, but he says there are ways to make your vehicle less desirable to thieves.

“Simple things. Park in a well lit area if it’s at night time, keep your windows up, lock your doors,” Hrycyk said.

All your valuables and everything like that should be put aside so that when people take a look inside, they don’t see anything in and they just move on to the next vehicle.”

If your car has been broken into, contact the police, Hrycyk said.
