‘It brings a lot of joy to my heart’: Easter Bunny grants wish for Make-a-Wish

The Easter Bunny made time out of its busy schedule Saturday to grant a wish for Alexa English, a Newfoundland girl who traveled to Medicine Hat to visit family.

Alexa’s wish was simple: once her cancer treatments were finished and she was able to travel, she wanted to visit her cousins and go Easter-egg hunting.

Make-a-Wish Foundation worked with Alexa’s family and the Easter Bunny to make that wish a reality.

Foundation volunteer Donna Serr said granting these wishes for nearly 19 years has been rewarding.

“To be part of these children’s wishes is just so heartwarming, especially this wish, an Easter wish,” Serr said.

“It was such a pleasure arranging it and meeting this little girl and her cousins,” she added.

“To see them just have so much joy with the Easter Bunny and running around, collecting eggs. It was just wonderful.”

Mandy English, Alexa’s mother, said the wish being granted elated the family.

Mandy said her brother moved to Medicine Hat from Newfoundland nearly 20 years ago.

Due to travel restrictions during the early COVID years and Alexa’s treatments, they were unable to visit as often as they wanted.

Mandy said once everyone was given the greenlight, the countdown was on.

“Everybody was so excited,” Mandy said.

“The countdown has been on for quite some time and I can’t even begin to tell you how excited everyone was.”

While Alexa heads into spring break with the family in tow, Serr hopes the community recognizes the value in granting wishes.

“I want the community to know that we are granting wishes to these very special children,” Serr said.

“I’ve been doing this for just about 19 years and every time I’m part of seeing a child’s wish come true, it’s just the most wonderful feeling,” she said.

“When you have a sick child, it changes the entire dynamic of your family.”

“It’s difficult, you look at very difficult times, so to be able to bring some joy…it brings a lot of joy to my heart to bring joy to their lives.”

Make-a-Wish granted over 1,000 wishes in Canada last year.
