Heavy snow not a burden for Medicine Hat gardeners but wait to plant until May, says expert

While spring may have technically started this last week, Medicine Hat planters may have jumped the gun if they planted early.

Amy Van Dam from Windmill Greenhouses said that supplied have been coming in as expected, even with the heavy snowfall and recommends people wait until at least the May long weekend to plant.

Van Dam said that there are still options for people who have the space, such as buying seeds early and starting plants in garages but said that the anticipated droughts and water restrictions could pose a serious challenge.

“The snow is definitely welcome, any moisture we can get is alway welcome,” Van Dam said.

“Especially with the way things have been going the last couple years too, water restrictions are on a lot of peoples minds,” she added.

“We would advise people to kind of mulch as much as possible just to kind of keep more moisture in the soil.”

“If you still need to shovel your sidewalks, put that into your flower beds, put that under your trees and it should be okay for a little while.”

Van Dam said that gardeners looking to get an early start can look for blooming flowers or herbs like chives that can be grown easily on windowsills.
