Brooklyn Burzminski, a teacher at Eagle Butte High School, is the Prairie Rose School Division’s nominee for the Edwin Parr Award.

A first year teacher recognized for excellence is nominated by each school division in Alberta.

Six winners will be chosen across the province from each of the Alberta School Board Associations zones.

Miss Burzminski said it feels very rewarding for the work she has put in to be nominated and is excited to be considered.

“I’m super honored and I love the school that I’m at and everything that I’m teaching right now is going super awesome,” Burzminski said.

“The kids are amazing here. I could not say any better things,” she added.

“I guess everything is falling into place, at least for me it’s pretty awesome. So very honored.”

Miss Burzminski grew up in Medicine Hat, returning after completing her degree at the University of Alberta.

She said a lot of work has been put in to learning and getting resources together in her first year.

But finds it so rewarding being able to help students and seeing them succeed.

“I love being able to help them,” Burzminski said.

“When they come for help, I really enjoy doing that and then seeing their input for when they practice, then the output when they get their grades, I like marking them because I like to see again when everyone’s doing really well and if it’s not, then I try to think about what else I could do to help them,” she added.

“Just being around the kids all the time is super rewarding and I really enjoy doing that.”

Miss Burzminski didn’t always envision being a teacher, initially going to school for pharmacology.

“I wanted to help people, that’s where I kind of fell upon teaching. Some of my family members are teachers and they recommended me to go into that because they thought I would succeed at it,” Burzminski said.

“That’s kind of what led me to that, and now I get the best of both worlds because I can do Science and English, which is probably one of the only jobs that I can really get both,” she added.

“That’s what kind of pushed me towards it.”

Nominees from the 10 school divisions in zone six which includes Medicine Hat, Brooks, Lethbridge and areas will be recognized at a zone-level celebration.

The teachers will interview with the zone level committee before a winner is honoured provincially.

“I actually quite enjoy interviews,” Burzminski said.

“This is kind of fun for me, I guess to do it. But it’s even just to be nominated for the 10 people is super crazy to think about,” she added.

“I’m excited to move on to that and see how it goes.”

The nominee for the Medicine Hat Catholic School Board is Mackenzie Gill, a teacher at Ecole St. John Paul II school.
