Medicine Hat’s Mustard Seed in need of clothing to help support vulnerable and homeless

The Mustard Seed in Medicine Hat, an organization that provides anywhere from 500 to 700 pieces of clothing every month to the vulnerable and homeless population in the city, is asking for help.

The not-for-profit organization has a very strong need for donations right now, including winter coats and accessories.

Jordan Avery, site lead for the community impact centre, said in extreme cases there are people who come in with only the clothing they have on their back.

“We have to provide them with underwear hygiene items, anything like in the cold weather like this,” Avery said.

“We have to provide them with jackets, sweaters, long underwear, things that will keep them nice and warm to mittens, things like that. Those are the extreme cases,” she added.

“Generally speaking, if their jacket is worn out and they can’t afford to buy a new one, we will provide them with a new one.”

Women in need are often provided with mens clothing when women’s clothes aren’t available.

Avery told CHAT News what they are looking for right now.

“Men’s sweatpants, jeans, jackets, sweaters, socks are a huge thing that for us, we give away up would say 15 pairs of socks every single day,” Avery said.

“Those are our biggest needs right now, specifically the women’s clothing, people forget that we provide women’s clothing,” she added.

“We get a lot of men’s donations, but the women’s side is lacking.”

Donations can be made at the Mustard Seed on Allowance Avenue between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Those interested can call ahead to arrange to accept donations outside of those hours.
