Top-seeded Medicine Hat High School boys basketball team seeks provincial triumph

Mar 13, 2024 | 2:00 PM

The Medicine Hat High School senior boys basketball team had gone 10 years without winning a zone championship, until this year.

Now they are looking to carry their winning ways into the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association 4A High School Provincials.

After finishing the regular season with a 9-1 record and winning zones, they enter provincials as the top seed.

Their first game is Thursday at 11 a.m. against the 16th-seeded Grande Prairie Composite High School, a team they have never faced before.

To prepare for the unknown, Grade 12 athlete Arinze Aniagu said the team has analyzed some of Grande Prairie’s game footage.

After fostering a strong and close team this year, Aniagu is confident this might be their year to win the province.

“I think this is the closest team I’ve ever been with,” Aniagu told CHAT News.

“We’re all just like brothers, we all share stuff together. We just do everything together, so it’s like just another family,” he added.

“We’re confident in ourselves. We play hard, we play fast, so we’re just going to use that going into provincials.”

Aniagu believes the team’s toughest competition at provincials will be Raymond and St. Mary’s.

The Hat High senior girls team also qualified for provincials this weekend and are seeded 14th.

Their first game is against Foothills composite tomorrow morning at 11 a.m.
