Medicine Hat holds open house for major Third Street construction starting in April

Mar 11, 2024 | 4:43 PM

The City of Medicine Hat is holding an open house ahead of major upgrades to the water and sewer system on Third Street Southeast scheduled to start in April.

The open house will take place 5 p.m. to 7 :30 p.m. at the Esplanade Lobby on Tuesday, giving an opportunity for Hatters to learn more about the project.

The construction will replace original infrastructure first installed in the early 1900s, dating back to the development of the downtown core.

Cody Hyam, an environmental utilities engineer and project manager, said the old system is in desperate need of replacement.

“That’s something we’ve been trying to do for the last few years,” Hyam said.

“We finally have everything in place where we need to go in there and get that work done.”

Hamm Construction Ltd., of Saskatoon, was awarded the contract for the replacement, beating out five competing bids with the lowest estimate with a quote valued at approximately $7 million.

Those who attend the open house will have the chance to meet the contractor.

“We will have storyboard set up with pictures to show what to expect from construction as well as what we expect the complete project to look like,” Hyam said.

The overlay will also include traffic accommodations and a current schedule from Hamm Construction.
