‘The feeling was just euphoric’: Medicine Hat College Rattlers end difficult season on a high

Feb 26, 2024 | 1:10 PM

A season full of losses ended on a high for the Medicine Hat College Rattlers women’s hockey team.

The team went into their final match of the franchise’s inaugural season Saturday without a win.

They were up against fierce competition but managed to eek out a victory in the closing seconds of regular time.

The Rattlers avoided overtime play against the SAIT Trojans thanks to a goal from Kennedy King with less than a minute left in the third period, setting the team up to clinch a 4-3 win.

It was a big moment for goalie Kinlee Fahselt.

“I was shaking, just of anticipation, I was so excited,” Fahselt said of the final seconds.

“It was the longest five, 10 seconds of my life but as soon as that buzzer hit, the feeling was just euphoric, it was amazing.”

Head Coach Chad Baron said the season’s difficulties could be partially-blamed on the chemistry of the new squad.

“We got a late start and girls from a lot of areas, so it was kind of bringing it together, working together and kind of figuring each other out and getting some of that chemistry lined up what a bit of a challenge,” Baron said.

“We have girls who play at different levels so getting everyone up to speed has been a little bit [of a challenge] too,” he added.

“We’ve learned a lot of lessons this year and we’ll take some of that, the positives…and just work at some of the things that we need to get better at.”

The Rattlers did not qualify for the playoffs but are anticipated to return to the ice for another season later in 2024.
