Man in custody after refusing to leave Brooks north end residence, RCMP says

Feb 15, 2024 | 1:48 PM

An apparent standoff between a man inside a Brooks residence and police triggered precautionary measures in the city’s north end, according to a statement from the RCMP released Thursday.

Officers observed a 45-year-old man known to them enter the residence in the city’s Uplands neighbourhood at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

After police carried out door knocks, the man began to show signs of a mental crisis while inside, Brooks RCMP said.

Police already had an arrest warrant out for the suspect.

Officers held the scene secure while waiting for further resources and negotiators to arrive.

The RCMP’s Emergency Response Team used tactical tools to breach the residence where the male eventually came out to be arrested.

The suspect was charged with failing to comply with a probation warrant and an additional charge of obstruction for the standoff.

Further investigation is ongoing to find out if more charges will be forwarded as the suspect is held in custody for a hearing.

No one was injured, police said.

Students at Uplands Elementary School were relocated and residents were asked to avoid the area Wednesday afternoon. Police emphasized those were precautionary measures.
