Monarch Theatre to pause future movie screenings, focus on renovations

Feb 2, 2024 | 2:24 PM

All seven screenings of Your Cinema Needs You, a historical documentary on the Monarch Theatre, completely sold out.

There will be four more chances to catch the documentary later this month, but when it’s over, the Monarch will put a pause to movie screenings.

In the next year, the Monarch will focus on renovations that were ignored while the theatre was closed.

This includes renovating floors, expanding the stage, and de-cluttering. The Monarch will only be open for private event bookings.

Luke Fandrich is the creator of Your Cinema Needs You, the documentary that marked the reopening of the Monarch.

Though it’s time being screened at the theatre is almost up, Fandrich has plans to make the documentary available on streaming services across Canada.

Fandrich believes his documentary will be relevant for all Canadians, not just those in Medicine Hat.

“So many people say that regardless of whether or not you have any knowledge of the Monarch or Medicine Hat, it reminds them of the theatre that they grew up with,” Fandrich told CHAT News.

“This is a Canadian story, people have grown up with this. The evolution of the Monarch is the evolution of movie theatres in Canada. So there’s certainly a wide appeal to it.”

Those wanting to see one of the last four screenings of Your Cinema Needs You, can purchase tickets at Editing Luke’s website, or visit the Monarch Theatre box office tomorrow.
