It was announced earlier today that Rachel Notley was stepping down as the leader of the Alberta NDP.

Bob Wanner is a former NDP MLA for Medicine Hat who served as Speaker of the House during Notley’s term as premier of Alberta.

Wanner said that Alberta has lost an outstanding leader who was respected by all sides of the house.

“She was a women of integrity,” Wanner said.

“She fought extremely hard for all parts of this province.”

“She practiced what she believed and never apologized for that and always had the interest of Alberta and all of the citizens in mind.”

Wanner adds that with Notley it wasn’t just about winning elections, it was about looking to the long term.

He feel she will be missed, but feels you will hear from Notley as force and opinion in our province for a long time in one capacity or another.

Gwendoline Dirk a candidate for the NDP in the Brooks-Medicine Hat riding and currently is still involved with the local constituency association also shared her thoughts.

Dirk said that many positive came from Notley’s time in government.

“She’s so human,” Dirk said.

“She’s so compassionate.”

“I think she really was a leader who put Albertan’s first more than any politician I have ever seen.”

“She really cared about the problems and really just wants the province to move in the right direction, forward, not backwards.”

Dirk adds that it is sad that Notley is stepping down, but it’s also an exciting time to get involved with a NDP leadership race now coming.
