Auction of Minister's Special License

Minister of Forestry and Parks set to promote Alberta hunting

Jan 16, 2024 | 12:59 PM

Alberta will showcase its unique hunting and outdoor recreation opportunities at the Wild Sheep Foundation Sheep Show in Reno, Nevada.

From Thursday, January 18, until Sunday, January 21, Minster of Forestry and Parks and Central Peace Notley MLA Todd Lowen, and his team of three will be connecting with hunting enthusiasts to highlight Alberta’s animal life and landscapes.

Minister Lowen discussed the trip in the release; “Hunting plays an important role in our province’s conservation efforts and helps sustain healthy wildlife populations. I look forward to inviting outdoorsmen from around the world to come and experience Alberta’s great range of wildlife and abundant natural spaces.”

In the same release, the provincial government said Lowen will also be auctioning off the Minister’s Special Licence (MSL) for bighorn sheep.

These passes do come with a few perks, allowing the holder to hunt year-round as long as they are in a wildlife management area that has an existing hunting season for the species.

Only twelve of these passes are given away yearly through auction or raffle, with the funds going towards conservation initiatives and big game management in Alberta.

According to the release from the province, since 1995 MSL’s have provided $9 million in funding, with the big horn sheep licence selling at auction for $385,000 last year.
