Medicine Hat Tigers continue to lead central division

Jan 15, 2024 | 10:25 AM

Shane Smith’s pair of goals proved to be the difference Saturday night, as the Medicine Hat Tigers split their home-at-home series with the Lethbridge Hurricanes 3-2 at Co-op Place.

Early on in the first period the Hurricanes would strike on their only power play of the period and it was a misfortunate bounce for the Tigers penalty kill as Logan Wormald would benefit with his 11th of the season at 1:52 to give the visitors the lead and that lead would carry over into the 2nd period.

Medicine Hat would outshoot the Hurricanes 13-4 in the second period and lead to two goals against Hurricanes starting goaltender Harrison Meneghin as Shane Smith (Cessford, AB) would just throw a shot towards the Lethbridge nets and he’d net his 20th of the season at 12:46. Hunter St.Martin (Edmonton, AB) & Dru Krebs (Okotoks,AB) would tally assists on the Smith goal. The Tigers would take their first lead of the weekend against Lethbridge as St.Martin would score his 4th goal in five games with his 14th of the season from Oasiz Wiesblatt (Calgary,AB) at 16:15 and the Tigers would take that 2-1 lead to the third period.

In the final frame the Tigers would get an early power play and Shane Smith would tap home a cross ice pass from Oasiz Wiesblatt at 2:53 to make it a two goal cushion in the third. Tomas Mrsic (Surrey, BC) would notch a secondary point on the power play.

The Tigers would continue to carry play but with the goalie pulled for Lethbridge, Dylan Sydor would re-direct and follow up to pot his 21st of the season to make it a one goal game at 18:41. But that would be as close as the Hurricanes would get as the Tigers would hold on for their 26th win of the season in a 3-2 triumph.

The Tigers continue their lead atop the Central Division with a 26-13-2 record.
