‘Pay it forward’: Kinsmen Big Bag of Cash winner to share with charities, family

Jan 14, 2024 | 8:25 AM

The Big Bag of Cash and 50/50 draw is the main fundraiser for the Medicine Hat Kinsmen Club.

The big winner this year is Ronda Herrmann-Stickel, who took home the $100,000 prize.

Herrmann-Stickel lives on a farm by Hilda where she helps her husband with their grain and cattle operation.

She has been buying tickets on the Kinsmen draws for as long as she has been able to.

When Herrmann-Stickel got the phone call she was in shock and disbelief.

“I got a call about 5:05 on the day of the draw from a fellow named Kenton from the Kinsmen club,” Herrmann-Stickel said.

“I don’t know if I said anything coherent to him.”

“I was sort of overwhelmed and couldn’t believe it.”

She said she purchases the tickets to support the cause and winning was a huge bonus.

Herrmann-Stickel says that they already have a plan for the money.

“We’ve already picked out five charities that we’re gonna share the wealth with and pay it forward,” Herrmann-Stickel said.

“We’re going to give a little bit to our kids and our grandkids and then I think we’re just gonna tuck the rest away for travel.”

Herrmann-Stickel adds that she feels if someone comes into a windfall like this it’s good to think of the community and what the needs are and pay it forward.

The funds the Kinsmen raised are used for a number of initiative throughout Medicine Hat and area.

Steven Pudwell, president of the local Kinsmen branch is happy with how the fourth year of the draw went.

“We were around 2200 tickets sold,” Pudwell said.

“So almost sold out.”

“But overall it’s a good fundraiser for us and it’s a nice easy way for people to participate because you get a one in 2500 chance to win 100,000 dollars.”

“Those are pretty good odds.”

The Big Bag of Cash was brought in as a replacement for the home lotto in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the increased cost to build a home.

The 50/50 went to Kaylee Kuba who took home $61,675.
