Albertans were asked to immediately limit their electricity use to “essential needs only” by an emergency alert sent at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday.

That alert has now ended.

“Extreme cold resulting in high power demand has placed the Alberta grid at a high risk of rotating power outages this evening,” reads the alert sent to mobile phones.

It asks Albertans to turn off unnecessary lights and electrical appliances and minimize the use of space heaters.

It also asks to “delay charging electrical vehicles and plugging in block heaters.”

For more information, Albertans are asked to visit the Alberta Electric System Operator website.

The City of Medicine Hat says it will notify residents if there’s any risk to power here.

“If there is imminent risk to power in Medicine Hat, we will update accordingly,” the city said.

More details to follow.
