Community-focused grant program opens 2024 application period

Neighbourhood gardens, backyard concerts, shuffleboard competitions and other activities that can connect the Medicine Hat community are now eligible for this year’s round of community microgrants.

The city is offering up to $500 in the categories of “Neighbourhood Connections” and “Community Arts and Culture”.

Community microgrants are designed to foster connections in the community through gatherings and activities, with a variety of focuses, the city said Monday.

The microgrants program is intended to encourage residents to organize activities and events that strengthen bonds within their communities and neighbourhoods, according to the city.

The program is currently accepting applications for 2024, which will continue until the end of the year or until funds run out.

Applicants will be informed about the status of their application within 30 days after submission. Both individuals and groups have the option to apply either online or through a printed application form.

Other activities that qualified for the grant program in 2023 included a beading workshop, block parties, multi-cultural dinners, neighbourhood lawn bowling, a pop-up parks event, potters learning and exchange night, Metis week events and a line dance workshop.

The 2023 events included 1,060 participants and approximately 77 volunteers contributing over 238 volunteer hours.

To qualify, proposed grant recipients must fufill one or more of these objectives:

  • take place within Medicine Hat;
  • reflect the spirity of the 2023-2026 strategic plan;
  • offer the sharing of residents’ skills and knowledge;
  • and foster neighbourhood or community pride.
