MHHS Hawks dominate at basketball tournament

Medicine Hat, AB–It was a big weekend for the Medicine Hat High School Hawks basketball team.

The Senior and JV Hawks both finished first at the Super South Basketball Tournament this past weekend. The event was hosted by Monsignor McCoy and Crescent Heights High School.

In the 1st round, the senior Hawks beat Swift Current by a score of 117-43. They followed that up with 120-53 win against WR Myers in the semi-finals. The Hawks triumphed over Strathmore in the finals with a score of 98-66.

The Hawks say key players included Trey Watson, Arinze Aniagu, and Kyle Bertram. Watson averaged an impressive 24 points per game and contributing 6 assists. Arinze Aniagu and Kyle Bertram also showcased their scoring prowess, each averaging 16 points per game over the weekend. Remarkably, six players averaged double figures, highlighting the team’s depth of talent.

Meanwhile, the boys’ Junior Varsity Hawks mirrored the success of their Varsity counterparts. In the 1st round, they defeated Brooks 105-87, followed by an impressive 98-27 win against Crescent Heights High School in the second round. The championship game saw them emerge victorious against Chinook High School from Lethbridge with a final score of 81-69.

Haydon Van Maarion led the Junior Varsity Hawks in scoring, averaging an impressive 18 points over the weekend. Joel Miller contributed significantly, with an average of 16 points per game, while Sammy Salazar-Bojorquez averaged 13 points this weekend.

The Hawks travel to Lethbridge to take on LCI on Thursday. The Senior Hawks are 8 and 0 on the season and are undefeated in league play. The JV team is 7 and 1 on the season and also have a perfect record in league play.
