SWIFT CURRENT, SK – A dangerous strain of fentanyl is circulating around Saskatchewan, including the Swift Current area.

RCMP in Saskatchewan said that this strain of fentanyl is believed to be cut with a sedative resistant to naloxone.

Naloxone is used to quickly and temporarily reverse the effects of opioid overdose to provide opportunity for medical intervention.

Mounties say this version of fentanyl looks the same as other kinds, but any overdose it causes might be irreversible.

RCMP have responded to overdoses in the southern part of Saskatchewan in the past few months, including fatal ones.

They can’t say how many were potentially caused by the naloxone-resistant strain of fentanyl.

It’s not known if this strain of fentanyl has yet reached Medicine Hat.
