Name chosen for new Catholic school in Medicine Hat

Dec 14, 2023 | 2:59 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Catholic school trustees have selected the name of the new school to be built in Crescent Heights.

Holy Trinity Academy will be the new school’s title after board approval Tuesday.

According to trustees, the name was selected for a variety of reasons.

The main reason was the symbolism of the three schools (St. Michael’s, St. Francis, and St. Mary’s) uniting as one.

The word “academy” was chosen to represent the sports and fine arts programming that will continue at the new school.

Families and community members often wonder how a name for a school is chosen. The Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education says the naming of a new school is the responsibility of the Board of Trustees.

Trustees will organize a school naming committee who will then recommend a name for the Board of Trustees to approve.

Construction of the new school was approved earlier this year. It will be located on the current St. Francis Xavier school site at 8th Street NE.

Holy Trinity Academy is scheduled to open in the fall of 2026.
