MEDICINE HAT, AB – At Police Point Park this weekend Hatters can enjoy a blast from the past and see how useful it can be to know how to read a map and use a compass.

The orienteering for beginners class offered by the Medicine Hat Interpretive Program is this Saturday at 12 p.m. At the class, people can learn how to use a map and compass to find specific landmarks at the park.

Isaiah Hurlbut, interpreter at Police Point Park, says orienteering skills can be very important when camping, hiking or hunting and it can mean the difference between life or death in the wilderness. However, orienteering can also just be a fun hobby.

“At first I learned (orienteering) as a skill, a just in case skill, since I regularly go out and do outdoorsmanship activities and such,” says Hurlbut. “But it’s also just more fun than it seems to go out and find everything yourself with nothing more than a compass and a map.”
