MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Saamis Teepee will undergo a major repaint in April 2024 resulting in limited vehicle access, the city said Friday.

The project will see the Tepee’s zigzag decorative structure, featuring red and blue colors, matched to its previous 2009 and 2010 repaint.

The upgrade will also include repainting the steel portions of the structure, the main white pillars and the mast extension tips.

The upgrades will cost $1,080,000 and were already budgeted for in the 2023-2024 budget.

During the construction period, the Tepee will not be available for the Lighting for a Cause program that runs April 11 to Oct. 30.

The walking paths around the tepee will remain accessible, but the vehicle access gate may be closed intermittently to maintain work site safety.

Those interested can view the full extent of the site layout and access points online.

A recent episode of Our Town explored the history of the teepee.
