New family physician opens practice in Medicine Hat

MEDICINE HAT, AB – There is a new family doctor in town. Dr. Ahmed opened his family practice in Medicine Hat a month ago.

“Medicine Hat lost a lot of physicians last year. Because of that, I thought once I’m in, I would be getting that many patients,” says Ahmed. “That was my main concern, would I be overloaded with patients at first or not? But it didn’t seem to be the case.”

Dr. Ahmed grew up in Canada, but studied medicine in Sudan. He is back in Canada as an International Medical Graduate and has opened a family practice at The Ridge Medical Centre.

Dr. Ahmed says some of his current patients waited a long time for a family doctor.

“The city itself is beautiful and everyone is really wonderful and kind,” says Ahmed. “The fact that there weren’t enough family doctors was a drive for me to come here as well. Compared to other areas where I had an opportunity to work, they had less issues having family doctors around. I thought this would be a good place to start, where it’s the most needed place for a physician.”

Dr. Ahmed says he sees about 15 patients a day currently, but would look to expand up to 30.
