Natural gas rate policy up for debate at city council tonight.

MEDICINE HAT — Members of Medicine Hat city council will weigh proposed changes to how natural gas rates are set, as they hold the regular council meeting tonight.

The amendment to the current natural gas bylaw would see a single rate set for all customers, with the price set by the city on a month to month basis.

Briefing notes to council say the monthly rates would be based on the procurement cost for that month and the price would be based on wholesale costs, which should provide a benefit to the customer base.

Customers with a natural gas contract would be able to revert to the previous agreement by giving proper notice to the city before February 1, 2024.

A public hearing is scheduled before council gives second and third reading to the amendment.

However the city says no submissions were received to a notice advertising the public hearing.

Tonight’s council agenda also includes two notices of motion from councillor Shila Sharps.

Sharps wants administration to develop a safe workplace policy.

In particular, it would direct administration to draft a policy prohibiting violence and harassment directed at employees from members of the public, of by an employee towards a member of the public.

It could also include a process that allows for restrictions on communication from members of the public towards members of council or staff where warranted.

A second notice of motion calls for a complaints process to be included in revisions to the Code of Conduct bylaw currently underway.
