‘Charging forward’: Medicine Hat installs 2 new EV chargers

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The city is preparing for an electric future with some new infrastructure.

The City of Medicine Hat confirmed Tuesday it recently installed a pair of new electric vehicle charging stations at Towne Square, joining two existing chargers.

It’s a move the city’s director of utility distribution systems Grayson Mauch said is all part of the city adapting.

“We’re charging forward to support the transition to low-emission vehicles,” Mauch said in a news release.

“Improving access to charging stations ensures our community can welcome tourists and residents who have made the switch to electric vehicles.”

Funding for the new chargers was provided by the SouthGrow Regional Initiative, in partnership with the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre, and Natural Resources Canada through the Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program.

The grant covered $20,000 while Medicine Hat contributed just over $27,000 for the upfront capital costs.

Two Level 2 pedestals, each with two charging ports, are located at the northeast corner of the Towne Square parking lot at 603 First Street Southeast. Each of the four ports can provide 8.3 kilowatts each.

Towne Square is just a first step forward for the city, Mauch said.

“We chose Towne Square for our first install because it is a high use, well illuminated lot that is always open to the public,” he said.

“We’ll continue to seek out and commit funding to build out our public EV charging network from here.”

Users will initiate a charging session and pay $2 per hour through the Hypercharge iOS and Android application. Drivers are not subject to Hot Spot parking fees while hooked up to an EV charger.

EV drivers can map charger locations, including Towne Square, on the PlugShare website or app.
