Snowfall warnings, special weather statements in effect for southern Alberta

PINCHER CREEK, AB – The first notable snowfall of the season is on the way.

On Monday, October 23, 2023, Environment Canada has issued a combination of snowfall warnings and special weather statements for all of southern Alberta and most of central Alberta.

The following areas in the south region are under a snowfall warning:

  • Airdrie-Cochrane-Olds-Sundre
  • Banff National Park
  • Brooks-Strathmore-Vulcan
  • City of Calgary
  • Crowsnest Pass-Pincher Creek-Waterton Lakes National Park
  • Drumheller-Three Hills
  • Hanna-Coronation-Oyen
  • Kananaskis-Canmore
  • Medicine Hat-Bow Island-Suffield
  • Okotoks-High River-Claresholm

In the areas impacted by the snowfall warning, snowfall amounting to 10-15 cm will start on Monday afternoon and end by Wednesday morning.

The following areas in the south region are under a special weather statement:

  • Cypress Hills Provincial Park-Foremost
  • Lethbridge-Taber-Milk River

In the areas impacted by the special weather statement, snowfall amounting to two-to-five cm will start Monday and will end by Tuesday night. Some of the snow is expected to melt on contact with the warm ground.

Between the two weather advisories, Environment Canada warns that surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways, and parking lots may become slippery and difficult to navigate. Drivers are asked to adjust their driving behaviours accordingly.

By mid day Monday, RCMP were advising people to stay clear of a section of the Queen Elizabeth 2 highway between Olds and Carstairs.

At least a dozen collisions had been reported due to rapidly deteriorating conditions.

Didsbury RCMP report a school bus rollover on Highway 2A at Township Road 320.

The bus contained numerous students. The extent of injuries is unknown at this time.
