Sasquatch enthusiast has eyes set on Spruce Coulee Reservoir

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Deer sightings are common in Cypress County, but what about something larger and hairier, like Bigfoot?

A new resident to Medicine Hat is a passionate Sasquatch enthusiast, determined to track one down.

Darcy Stoffregen has been captivated by these creatures since he was three years old. It became such a big part of his life, he tattooed two Sasquatches on his arms.

Darcy used to live in the Chilliwack BC area, where potential Sasquatch sightings were more common.

‘While I was with the Bigfoot Field Researcher Organization we held at least six or seven expeditions up there where people could come,” explains Darcy. “There was only one or two up there where we didn’t have a sighting, but there was always sounds and footprints that we found.”

Darcy and his wife Helen moved to Medicine Hat in July, yet their fascination with Sasquatches remained. In 1998, there was a reported sighting of a Sasquatch in the Spruce Coulee Reservoir, just east of Elkwater.

“I looked on Google Earth and it’s got a lot of ground cover, the reservoir is there for water. And knowing what I’ve seen of deer in town here, in the park they’re going to be just as prominent,” says Darcy.

Deer are thought to be a food source of Sasquatches, meaning the more deer in an area, the more likely a Sasquatch will be spotted. Darcy plans to head to Spruce Coulee Reservoir to try and see one for himself.

“That’s my only goal, I just want to see one. A lot of other people have goals of wanting to prove they exist, but I’ve talked to too many people that have seen them up close enough to touch, I can’t say they’re not there,” says Darcy.

He adds that he does believes Sasquatches exist, but a tiny part of him will always be skeptical until he sees one in real life.

Like many others, Darcy’s wife Helen initially doubted the creature’s existence.

“The skepticism is still a little bit there, but thats okay, at the same time I believe that they are out there because I’ve seen the evidence,” says Helen.

Darcy hopes one day, a Medicine Hat group can organize expeditions into wooded Cypress areas. He knows not everyone will believe in the creature, but also sees the expeditions as a way to get outside and explore.

“There’s a lot of people thinking they’ll be ridiculed if they start talking about it,” says Darcy.

He wishes to change that.

Darcy has plans to get out to the Spruce Coulee area this fall, or next summer.
