Brooks time capsule to be opened this Saturday

BROOKS, AB – Sealed in a wall in Brooks City Hall lays a time capsule that hasn’t seen the light of day for 25 years. However, on Saturday that capsule will be opened.

“It’s kind of like Christmas. You have a certain anticipation, you don’t know exactly what you’re going to get,” says Mayor of Brooks, John Petrie.

On October 14th, 1998, Brooks residents contributed items of significance to the time capsule, to commemorate the newly renovated town office. On Saturday the City of Brooks invites the public to gather at city hall to witness the unveiling.

Mayor Petrie deems 25 years as the perfect duration for the buried capsule, allowing its contributors to see its reopening. Despite this, no one seems to remember or know what was put inside.

“We touched base with the mayor of Brooks at that time, he really doesn’t know what’s in it,” explains Mayor Petrie. “So when we open it up on Saturday it’s going to be pretty exciting. You have to realize like in 25 years a lot has really changed, not only in Brooks, but all of Canada and the world.”

The capsule reopening will take place at 11am Saturday.
