MEDICINE HAT, AB–It’s been an award winning season so far for two members of the Medicine Hat College Rattlers Golf team.

The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) named Medicine Hat’s Michael Valk, the 2023-24 ACAC Male Golf Player of the Year.

Valk won both regional championships leading up to ACAC Championships where he maintained the lead from start to finish. He secured a gold medal with a score of -8, five shots better than his closest competitor.

In seven rounds throughout the season, Valk was over par on just two of them. “Medicine Hat College and Rattlers Athletics are extremely proud of Michael. He has established himself as the top male golfer in the ACAC with some outstanding rounds and scores. Michael is a dedicated student-athlete working towards a diploma in Power Engineering and is preparing to participate in the 2023 CCAA Golf National Championships,” said Terry Ballard, Manager of Athletics and Recreation.

Taryn Sanderson was also recognized by the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference. Sanderson has been named the 2023-24 ACAC Female Golf Rookie of the Year.

Sanderson is a first-year student-athlete. In her first event at the North Regional in the ACAC, she finished in 6th place and was the 2nd-best scorer on the Rattlers team.

Sanderson also came in 5th at the South Regional on the team’s home course and was again the second-best scorer on the team.

At the ACAC Championships, she placed 6th and secured herself a ticket to nationals with her performance.

“The Medicine Hat College and Rattlers Athletics are proud of Taryn for winning the 2023 ACAC Golf Female Rookie of the Year. Taryn had a solid season of ACAC Golf with the Rattlers and helped the Rattlers women’s golf team earn a silver medal at the Conference Championships, said Ballard.
