Thumbs up: #dominicstrong auction back this weekend

Sep 29, 2023 | 12:20 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Thumbs will be up and bidding this weekend in an online auction honouring the memory of a young Hatter who passed away eight years ago.

Dominic Rooney was less than a year old when he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2013. He died two years later and almost immediately the #dominicstrong online auction was born.

All the money raised goes to the Alberta Children’s Hospital where Dominic spent much of his life.

There are 108 items in the auction this year everything from gift cards to homemade items and gift baskets. In its ninth year, the auction routinely raises about $10,000 annually.

His parents Sean and Trish saw it as a way to give back and now describe it as a way to celebrate his memory and parent a child who is no longer here

“I think a big part of his spirit was sort of what became our logo was the thumbs up. No matter what he was going through, and he was only two years old when he passed, he didn’t know anything different and so he just thought the world was wonderful even though it was throwing the most awful curveball at him you could ever imagine,” says Sean.

“And I think that really shone through in the blog posts and the videos and everything that we shared about him and I think people remember that. And people are going through hard times even now, I like to think they can look at his blog and sort of see you can approach things in a positive way just like he did.”

The auction starts Friday at 5 p.m. and ends Sunday at 5 p.m.

Year-round support

Sean, Trish and the local #dominicstrong team raise money for the Alberta Children’s Hospital all year long.

You can donate to the Alberta Children’s Hospital through #dominicstrong any time during the year through Sean’s Extra Life page.

Each fall, Extra Life gamers from around the world collect pledges and play games for 24 hours. This year’s game day is on Nov. 7. Sean says anyone who wants to start their own Extra Life page can do so at extra-life.org and can have their own game day when it works for them.
