VAUXHALL, AB – The Vauxhall Baseball Academy in southeastern Alberta is a well-respected program with top-notch facilities. But it’s nothing compared to a major league field.

Brett Getz and five of his Vauxhall Jets teammates have experienced both this month. Last week they were at the Toronto Blue Jays Canadian Futures Showcase, where the top 150 players in Canada play a tournament in front of college recruiters and pro scouts at Rogers Centre, the home of the Blue Jays

Getz says it was an awesome experience and a chance to better his game.

“I learned little stuff with my mechanics that you don’t even notice until you slow down video. I was able to make some changes with that and change my mentality a bit, learn how to push the players and different hitters and how to start counts and whatever,” he says. “And then all the mental game being able to play your best at all times and believe in yourself and do the best you can and be 100 per cent at all times.”

Get, who has already committed to Sacramento State University next year, has his sights on a professional baseball career. He says learning from some of the best coaches in Canada who’ve played at the highest level will get him closer to that dream.

Catcher Alexandre Laurence, Infielder Luke Wheatley, outfielder Stevyn Andrachick and pitchers Jack Baxter and Andrew MacInnis joined Getz in Toronto.

Back in Vauxhall, about 100 kilometres west of Medicine Hat, Getz says the Jets are wrapping up their fall schedule and clicking as a new group before spring.

Last season’s Vauxhall Jets squad was one of the best in the school’s history, says Getz. It finished winning 24 games in a row and five tournament wins.
