Medicine Hat College spreads message of support for consent awareness week

MEDICINE HAT, AB – This week, the Medicine Hat College (MHC) Student Association has been celebrating pride. In conjunction with pride, they’ve also recognized consent awareness week.

Many post-secondary institutions across the country have organized events for consent awareness week, all about educating students on what consent is. Today MHC ran the hashtag #webelieveyou day, where students can write messages of support to survivors of gender based violence, as well as support of pride week. The school also set up educational poster boards for students to approach, ask questions, and learn.

Lily Schaerer, President of the Student Association hopes this awareness week decreases the stigma when talking about consent.

“We just want people to know how to create those healthy boundaries, have healthy relationships, and know that it’s okay to say no if you’re being forced into something or feel uncomfortable to partake in some activities,” explained Schaerer.

“I think all our efforts towards students are super positive and all of our awareness weeks really encourage students to feel safe coming into our Students Association,” Schaerer added. “We do truly have a lot of student support services.”

Tomorrow at the college in the crowfoot room, Safe Link will host a “safer sex” presentation including consent topics. It will run from 4:00pm to 5:00pm.
