Pride Week at MHC promotes allyship and belonging

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat College is going the extra mile to support the 2SLGBTQIA+ and promote allyship and belonging for Pride Week.

Students’ Association president Lily Schaerer says she wants everyone to know the college community is a safe space.

The rainbow flag is now flying above the college’s main entrance after the flag raising at lunch today.

Throughout the week workshops and an information fair will take place and people can show support at a selfie station and button-making event.

Schaerer thinks the feeling of inclusivity at the college gets better each year as more people get involved in weeks like this.

She adds it’s easy to help grow that inclusive spirit in and outside of the college all year long.

“I think it’s a choice you make every single day to just smile at everyone, it doesn’t have to be a specific member of any community,” she says. “But it’s just being positive and saying hello and welcoming everybody into the community. It’s making a friend at an event or joining a club and just promoting allyship and great, positive human behaviour.”

Schaerer says the events are centred around college students but other community members are welcome.
