Cubs reach 50th year anniversary, hoping for success with new lineup

MEDICINE HAT, AB – As pre-season action for the Junior B Medicine Hat Cubs will soon draw to a close, the team finds itself in a significant year of celebration. This season marks the 50th anniversary of Cubs Hockey.

In honor of this milestone, they have some activities planned. On October 7th, the Cubs will host an alumni game before the home-opener. The team will also retire the #10 jersey, paying tribute to past player Terry Bartman.

Looking towards regular season action, the team did lose five of their top goal scorers this year. However, Coach Randy Wong says returning players like center Callen Prosofsky and forward Gerret Harty have proven to be leaders, keeping the team focused.

Their goal this year is winning the provincial championships. The last two years the Cubs lost to Okotoks in the South Final. Wong wants to change that outcome with the new team.

“I’ve been really impressed with the guys this year. The thing that stands out to me is their work ethic and their attitude,” said Wong. “They’ve come with a mindset this year that I haven’t seen for a long time. I’m really pleasantly surprised and optimistic of the year and how it’s going to unfold.”

The Cubs last pre-season game will be on Sunday against the Coaldale Copperheads.
