MEDICINE HAT, AB – A Medicine Hat group founded last year to find out what’s important to city residents has gone big for its first event.

Michelle Sauve, executive coalition member of What Matters to Hatters, says Medicine Hat Culture Days 2023 will be a week-long multicultural event.

“This coalition’s tagline so to speak is that we want to create hope, resiliency and connection in our community and we want to shine a light on all the great things happening in Medicine Hat but also we want to try to create more opportunity for great things to happen,” says Sauve.

A Multicultural Sports Event at the Southview Community School sports field on Sunday starts the official week, after Art in Motion at the Esplanade on Saturday. The week will continue with multicultural sessions on Tuesday and films on Wednesday. The rest of the week will include a Pop Up Park, a Demonstration Pow Wow and a Taste of Cultures Potluck Picnic among other events.

Sauve points to last year’s Together Again festival as an example what her group is striving for.

A survey by the group last winter got about 250 responses and the feedback was used to build next week’s calendar.

“People want to see more outdoor events, family-friendly, free, and also more opportunities during the fall and winter,” says Sauve. “We have a lot of great things happening in Medicine Hat every summer we know that. So one of the things that was really asked for quite regularly in the survey was more multicultural events and so that’s why we’re doing this project that’s coming up next week.”

Sauve says What Matters to Hatters worked with more than a dozen community organizations to help plan the week.

More initiatives are in the works and details are likely to come this winter, she adds.
