LETHBRIDGE, AB – A Lethbridge woman charged in connection to an assault and hostage-taking situation has been sentenced.

The decision was handed down in the Alberta Court of Justice on Tuesday for Courtney Louise Shaw, 41.

She pleaded guilty earlier this summer to 11 counts, including taking a hostage, pointing a firearm, unlawful confinement, and aggravated assault.

A few other charges, including attempted murder, had previously been withdrawn.

The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) said it responded to the Lethbridge Legal Guidance office in the downtown core on July 14, 2022, following reports that a woman had been taken hostage.

The victim, aged 54 at the time, told media that she was stabbed in the neck multiple times and suffered life-threatening injuries.

Shaw received a global sentence of 3,650 days, or 10 years. With credit for time already served, she will spend another 3,022 days, or a little more than eight years behind bars.

She also faces a firearms prohibition.
