Downtown pedestrian underpass to be closed nightly starting next week

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Gates have been installed on the downtown pedestrian underpass and will be locked at night starting on Monday.
The underpass connecting South Railway SE and North Railway SE will closed from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly.
Last month when the plan was announced, the City of Medicine Hat’s managing director of development and infrastructure said the walkway is not being used as intended, particularly at night.
“Even if the risk is borne from innocent intentions like folks just trying to keep warm, the city has an obligation to do our best to protect from unintended consequences when we are aware of a safety concern that is preventable,” Pat Bohan said.
