MEDICINE HAT, AB – Classrooms and hallways are beginning to fill with students as another school year is set to begin.

Medicine Hat College is welcoming students to Strike First on Thursday and Friday so they can get familiar with the campus before classes start next week.

Joyce-Ann Bacon is one of the students who took advantage of it on Thursday morning.

“I had an opportunity to go to the library and be able to get my student ID and be able to get my books and have a look at my books that I had to get,” she said after the tour. “And I got a code, I didn’t know that we had to get a code for class so that was kind of cool. And walked to where my class is which is outside the building. It’s in N {wing} so we had to go out by the daycare which is kind of cool.”

Bacon is starting in the Service Dog and Canine Management program and wanted to get to know her way around the school in the calm before the student storm next week.

She also visited the library, the cafeteria and tucked-away spaces where students can study or just find a little quiet time.

Emma Cohen is one of the student ambassadors who are acting as tour guides.

She was on the other side of the tour last year when she was a first-year student and is happy to pay it forward this year.

“This was super helpful. I was really confused about where I get textbooks and the college is pretty big I had no clue how to get around so people walked me around, they showed me where to get textbooks, they showed me how to use the printing services here and they explained to me a lot of the resources we have so it was really helpful actually,” she said.

Strike First is on again Friday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Bacon and Cohen encourage all new students to attend.

The first day of classes for all students is Sept. 6.
