Echo Dale boat lake to open Friday

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The boat lake in Echo Dale Regional Park will finally open for the 2023 season tomorrow.

A release from the City of Medicine Hat says work to replace the lake’s liner is complete and it will open to the public at 7 a.m. on Friday.

The lake has been closed this season after a leak was discovered in the boat lake by city maintenance crews late last year. That came after a 2022 season of unusually low water levels. Investigation revealed the boat lake liner, which is more than 30 years old, was compromised.

The work saw the original clay liner replaced with a more rubberized one that is said to protect better against leaks.

The necessary work on the boat lake delayed the opening of the swim lake until the middle of July this year.

The city says the lake is not currently stocked with fish, so fishing is not an option. People are also asked to be careful when entering and exiting the lake and be mindful of potential trip hazards.
