Open Farm Days celebrates Alberta agriculture

Aug 17, 2023 | 4:31 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Open Farm Days is back in Alberta this weekend and one nearby farm is presenting an Indigenous Prairie Cattle Experience that will show not only contemporary farming but also the history of the land.

Held this year Aug. 19-20, Open Farm Days is a celebration of agriculture in Alberta, with the aim of giving people a better understanding of where the food on their tables starts from.

Victor Lethbridge and his wife Dorothy will welcome people to their farm on Saturday. They’ve operated D Bar V Farms near Rolling Hills for about eight years and took part in their first Open Farm Days last year.

They have a lot planned for participants this year.

“We take them on a guided tour of the area where there is teepee rings, you see quite a few teepee rings and artifacts there, a grinding stone that was there, there’s a jump area and there’s a spot where there’s a lot of crushed bone where they broke up bone for the bone marrow for food in the old days,” says Lethbridge, a member of the Wood Mountain Lakota First Nation in southern Saskatchewan, of the Indigenous part of the tour.

He says participants will also see farm’s Timothy hay field, can learn about the irrigation system they use and there will be a cattle feeding experience in the pasture.

Victor says he and his wife both feel it’s important to give people a hands-on experience and first-hand perspective of farming when possible.

“We can answer questions. People sometimes you know – what is a pivot? how does that work? what about cattle? what about growing crops?” he says. “There may not be the realization of the thin margins that farmers and ranchers operate on and how we are held to conditions of the environment and how we strive to be caretakers of the land.”
