Aug 17, 2023 | 5:17 PM

Both a weather warning and a special weather statement have been issued for the Medicine Hat area on Thursday.

A heat warning is in effect with high temperatures ranging from 29 C to 34 C expected until Friday, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada. Temperatures are expected to cool by Saturday morning.

People are advised to take precautions to protect themselves and their families.

An air quality statement has also been issued by the weather service.

It says wildfire smoke from the west is causing or expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility.

Wildfire smoke concentrations can fluctuate over short distances and vary considerably from hour to hour, and can be harmful to everyone’s health even at low concentrations.

According to the Air Quality Health Index at 5 p.m., Medicine Hat’s air is rated at 6, the high end of the moderate risk category. It is forecast to rise to 7 on Thursday before coming back down on Friday.

Similar warnings are in effect across southern Alberta and Saskatchewan.
