MEDICINE HAT, AB – A Medicine Hat volleyball player is back from the North American Indigenous Games and considers himself a winner on and off the court.

Alex Baird is a member of the Michel band which is located near Edmonton and represented Team Alberta at the Indigenous games in Halifax this month.

On the court the outside hitter helped Alberta go undefeated at the games, winning the gold medal with a 3 sets to 1 victory over Manitoba.

Off the court, Baird says he made connections with other members of the band spread across the province.

“I made a lot with a lot of new people from all over the province, all the way from way up north to Calgary, Edmonton,” he says. “A lot of guys that had already graduated so I might be able to see them later if I go to post-secondary and I was able to learn a lot about them, get a nice little bond with them.”

Baird is getting ready for his Grade 12 year at Medicine Hat High School and hopes his experience at the game helps him and his Hawks teammates this season.
