EDMONTON – The Law Society of Alberta has ordered a hearing for a former cabinet minister in the Government of Alberta.

The Society alleges that Kelechi Madu, who goes by the first name “Kaycee,” engaged in conduct that undermined respect for the administration of justice.

This is in relation to an incident on March 10, 2021, when Madu received a ticket for distracted driving from the Edmonton Police Service.

Madu stated that he had phoned the city’s police chief to ensure that he was not being racially profiled or singled out for surveillance, given his position as Alberta’s justice minister at the time. He told media that he did not ask the chief to waive the ticket.

Madu was stripped of his ministerial post in January 2022.

The single-term MLA lost his bid for re-election in Edmonton-South West in the May 2023 Alberta provincial election.

The Law Society of Alberta is set to conduct a virtual hearing into the matter but has not yet set a date.
